Pere Galera: ARCITECTURE OF EMPTINESS

08.02.07-04.03.07 (Galleri A minor)

Utstillingen finner sted i Galleri A

Pere Galera er spansk men bosatt i Norge.

Contemporary urban design reflects an impulse for imprinting unique and particular identities and often results in the creation of spectacular and ephemeral spaces in which city dwellers are converted into spectators of stages virtually impossible to occupy/live in. Somehow the modern areas produced by this sort of design concentrate and energize the great cities, continuously shaping them into complex, independent and self-sufficient macro-entities.
I use my painting to reflect on our urban spaces, using the canvas as the pictorial surface to design, paint and develop structures that evoke their dimensions. Taking it one step further, I build "windows" that generate a certain tri-dimensionality that invests the work with an object-like quality. These windows invite the viewer inside, granting access to the private; yet paradoxically, the background (the private) only reveals the extension of the surface (the public). In other words, the private becomes part of the public domain.
That said, the construction of reality created by the superimposition of the two planes is nothing more that an optical illusion. If we look from different vantage points, we discover that the image becomes distorted, an effect created by the fact that the space between the planes is occupied by emptiness.
I wish to explore these empty spaces; those produce the union between the two levels, the superficial and the background, the public and the private. I propose a contemplation of the frontier, and simultaneously, the nexus that exists between these two dualities, one that projects an imaginary architecture of emptiness.
