Bjarne Svanøe

Bjarne Svanøe’s (b. 1954) paintings inhabit the intersection of the figurative and the expressive, where landscapes, coastlines, and urban environments dissolve and re-emerge as painterly structures. His motifs remain recognizable, yet never fixed—they exist in a state of continuous transformation.

Svanøe approaches nature as a living system, in which light, color, and form do not merely describe but actively transform the subject. His brushwork generates rhythm and movement, allowing the paintings to unfold as ongoing processes rather than static representations.

Through this approach, an expanded understanding of landscape emerges—not as a bounded motif, but as part of a broader ecological and sensory continuum. Urban and natural elements coexist within the same visual and conceptual field, blurring the boundaries between the organic and the constructed.

Svanøe’s practice invites an experience of nature as fluid and interconnected—a system in perpetual change, where humans are not separate observers, but integral participants within a larger whole.

His work has been acquired by two of Western Norway’s प्रमुख art collections: the Mowinckel Collection and the Grieg Collection.
