Asylum as I want to spot the light on is the abstraction of the word. It does not necessarily mean asylum as protection and immunity from extradition granted by a government to a political refugee from another country, even though many might think so because I am myself a refugee in Norway. What I mean by asylum is the state of asylum, or asylum as an institution for the care of people, especially those with physical or mental impairments, who require organized supervision or assistance; a place offering protection and safety; a shelter.
For me that will cover more than just my political situation, because it will go further into the human inside me.
Why asylum?
Because that’s what I do when I paint, which is a paradox in a way, in which the asylum seeker is building his own shelter by hiding himself inside himself? Somehow this soul digging is a good way for feeling safe. For seeking what you lack is a hard process but so joyful, because you discover some other things about yourself as well.
Canvases are my friends and challengers. With their empty surfaces when I buy them questioning my ability of reaching a meaning in what I am going to paint.
I never make sketches or plan some figures or colours before I paint. My only plan when I am going to paint is that I am going to paint.
Welcome to my secrets.
